Chapter 12

I can't do this. I really can't. Yet I have to. I can't hold it back any longer. I guess I'm just lucky that none of my sisters live at home with me anymore because I'm sure they would've picked up on the hoards of pregnancy tests that I never ended up taking, plus how careful I'm being with what I eat and drink. I know how lucky I am to be pregnant, so I intend to follow every rule in the book.

"It's going to be fine," Henry whispers, taking my hand and squeezing it three times, a habit he's gotten into recently. "We're going to do this together."

I smile at him and nod, wishing I could find the words to express my emotions, but for some reason, any feelings I have are trapped inside of me. I guess I don't want to show Henry any nerves or anxiety, or he might think I regret what we've done, which isn't the case at all.

I'm so grateful to be pregnant. I'm over the moon. It's just this. When Henry and I first planned this big reveal, I thought it'd be easier to tell everyone all at once. My sisters and his brothers. Mr. and Mrs. Jones as well. Of course, my dad isn't in town at the moment. I haven't seen him since Brie and Eric's wedding, and he's basically impossible to get in touch with, so there's nothing I can do about that. Yet everyone else is here, at the Jones's house, waiting for dinner and the bombshell they don't know is coming.

Tackle all the questions and opinions in one fell swoop, that's what I figured. Talk through this once, then we'll never have to go through this again. Then again, maybe we should have talked to everyone one at a time, lessened the pressure on our shoulders a bit.

"Hey, Elizabet, did you hear?" Brie calls out as she joins Henry and me in Jones’s family library where I've been hiding. Upon hearing her footsteps, Henry drops my hand like a hot potato. I shouldn't be hurt by this, yet it feels weird. "Guess who I heard from recently? Someone who's coming back to town, which is super exciting."

"Um…" She pauses for me to guess, but my head is far too all over the place for me to try and work out which blast from the past might be reentering our lives.

"Roxy Davies." Brie's face breaks out into a smile. "She used to work with me, remember? Until she left town with Jasper, who was one of the assistant coaches under Mr. Jones. Their gorgeous little baby boy too. But they're both coming back with some amazing project that apparently Eric is going to be really interested in. I don't know what, but I'm excited. Eric is going to need something else to focus on soon, so I'm hoping this really is great. "

Brie's words peter out. Her eyes dart between Henry and me, and my breath catches in my throat as I try and prepare myself for the inevitable question that's going to come.
